A tour in Sicily, discovering Palermo and Monreale.
Meet your deiver and your guide at your hotel in Palermo and start your full day discovery of Palermo and Monreale.
First a Greek and Roman city, then a capital of the Arab world, and later conquered by both the Normans and the Swabians – this is Palermo, a place where preciosities left by the Arab and Norman rules coexist along with the Baroque and Art Nouveau styles of the buildings and monuments, the city streets and markets, gardens and theatres.
The influence of Palermo’s enormously multi-ethnic past is visible in its Cathedral, a majestic work begun in the 12th Century and rehashed a number of times. Nearby, the Norman Palace stands with Palatine Chapel: originally an Arab structure, it has always been the seat of power. From here, moreover, one can move down toward the sea, passing by the Vuccirìa, the oldest and most-animated market in the entire city. Finally, visit the deconsecrated Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, built on the foundations of an old Mosque, and boasting red domes done in the oriental style.
After lunch ( not included) meet your driver and continue to Monreale with your guide.
No extended visit of Palermo is truly complete without a visit to Monreale.
Overlooking Palermo, Monreale, from the Latin "Mons Regalis" ('Royal Mountain' is set at about three hundred metres above sea level. The cathedral and its cloister represent the largest concentration of Norman, Arab and Byzantine art in one place. This is not just “another church”, it’s the place where East and West meet each other.
The Icon of Christ represents the best of twelfth-century culture. The mosaics covering the cathedral walls are one of the world's largest displays of this art, surpassed only by Istanbul's Basilica of Saint Sofia, once an Orthodox church.
